Arlington, Texas (Aug 24, 2004)The world’s greatest athletes are gathering in Greece this month, but top mental athletes gather every day at Mensa meetings around the world.

Mensa, the high IQ society, is an international organization open to anyone who scores in the top two percent on an accepted, standardized intelligence test. Whereas the odds of becoming an Olympian are minute, the odds of qualifying for Mensa are much better: one in 50 people is eligible to join the organization.

This October, mental athletes across the country will have their chance to go for the gold and try out for Mensa membership. American Mensa will hold its annual National Testing Day on Oct. 16, 2004. On that day, the Mensa Admission Test will be administered at more than 150 locations from coast to coast.

Anyone who scores in the top two percent on the Mensa Admission Test will be invited to join the organization. The test takes approximately two hours to complete and is open to anyone age 14 and older. Parental permission is required for anyone 14-17 years old. The test fee is $30 and a photo ID is required. Test locations may be found on American Mensa’s Web site, www.previous.us.mensa.org, beginning Sept. 1.

Just as physical exercise requires a good warm-up, a mental workout requires one as well. The Mensa Home Test is a great way to get ready for the Mensa Admission Test. Available at www.previous.us.mensa.org, the home test will give test takers an idea of the types of questions they will encounter on the admission test. To help test takers prepare for the October event, the home test will be available at the reduced rate of $15 until September 15. (Regular price: $18)

Mensa’s Mini-Quiz* is also a good way to jumpstart your brain. The 11-question quiz will get your brain ready for any type of mind olympics.

American Mensa has 136 chapters nationwide and members in more than 100 countries. Membership benefits include a subscription to the Mensa Bulletin, the opportunity to attend local, national, and international events, the ability to join more than 150 special interest groups, and discounts on various products and services. Five million Americans are eligible for membership.
